Iran Steel Market Update: Strong Billet Demand Meets a Volatile Rebar Market
Iran’s steel and rebar market is ending September with two different signals across the steel value chain. While steel billet transactions on the Iran Mercantile Exchange have attracted strong demand, the rebar market remains mixed, with prices rising at some mills and declining at others. This divergence is creating a more cautious environment for both buyers and sellers.
On September 21, approximately 55,875 tonnes of steel billet were offered on the Iran Mercantile Exchange, and the entire volume was sold when matching transactions were included. The weighted average billet price reached approximately 70,951 tomans per kilogram, representing a modest 0.2% weekly increase. Full absorption of the available billet supply indicates that demand from rolling mills remains active. Chilan Online
The rebar market, however, continues to show a less consistent pattern. Some producers raised their quotations while others reduced prices. For example, 14 mm A3 rebar from Anahita Guilan moved higher, while 18 mm rebar from Arian Foolad recorded a notable decline. The mixed movement suggests that the market has not yet established a clear upward or downward trend. تجارت نیوز
Weak end-user demand remains one of the main forces limiting the market. Although suppliers are showing resistance to further price cuts, construction-sector buyers continue to act cautiously. A similar pattern can be seen in the structural steel market, where limited project-driven demand is also placing pressure on trading activity. تجارت نیوز
As a result, the Iranian steel market is currently caught between two opposing forces: firm billet demand and relatively strong raw-material prices on one side, and weak demand for finished construction steel products on the other. If billet prices remain elevated, rolling mills may have less room to reduce rebar prices. However, a sustained upward trend will likely require stronger real demand from the construction sector.
Looking ahead, steel billet prices, rebar prices, currency movements, Iran Mercantile Exchange transactions, and construction demand will remain the key indicators to watch. The market is currently in a wait-and-see phase, and the first weeks of the new Iranian month could provide clearer signals for the direction of steel and rebar prices.
